What is SMPP?
SMPP, short for Short Message Peer-to-Peer, is a protocol used to exchange SMS messages between systems, most commonly between mobile network operators, SMS aggregators, and messaging platforms. It is designed for high-throughput SMS messaging and supports both message submission and receipt. SMPP has been widely used in the telecommunications industry since the 1990s.
Most businesses don't need to interact with SMPP directly. Instead, they connect through an SMS API or SMS gateway, which handles the SMPP connection to SMS carriers behind the scenes.
How the SMPP Protocol Works
An SMPP connection generally works like this:
A system establishes a "bind" to a carrier or aggregator's SMPP server, authenticating with a system ID and password
Once bound, outgoing messages can be submitted using “submit_sm” PDUs. Incoming messages and delivery receipts can be returned using “deliver_sm” PDUs.
The connection stays open, allowing continuous two-way message flow without reopening a connection for every message
The bind is closed when the session ends or the connection drops
Because the SMPP protocol operates at this low level, setting it up and maintaining it requires dedicated technical resources and a direct relationship with a carrier or aggregator.
Why Businesses Use an SMS API Instead of SMPP Directly
Very few businesses connect to SMPP themselves. An SMPP API or direct SMPP connection is more commonly used by carriers, aggregators, and large-scale messaging providers that need to manage high volumes of messages and multiple carrier relationships.
