Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR)

Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) is a standard developed by HL7 (Health Level Seven International) for exchanging electronic health information. It defines a flexible, modern framework based on RESTful APIs and structured data formats (such as JSON and XML), enabling seamless interoperability between healthcare systems, applications, and devices. FHIR simplifies the secure sharing of patient records, clinical data, and administrative information while supporting mobile applications, cloud-based solutions, and real-time data access in healthcare.
FHIR can enhance fax workflows in healthcare by integrating digital fax solutions with electronic health records (EHRs) and other healthcare systems.

FHIR can be used to convert faxed documents into structured data. Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and Natural Language Processing (NLP) extract patient information from faxes and map it to FHIR resources such as Patient, Observation, or Medication Request.
This enables automatic population of EHRs, reducing manual data entry.
