What is a Sender ID in SMS Messaging? 

A Sender ID is the name or number that appears as the sender when someone receives an SMS message. When using an online SMS service like Notifyre, a custom Sender ID allows a company to replace random phone numbers with a recognisable brand name. This plays a key role in SMS marketing by increasing open rates and building trust with recipients. Sender IDs can be alphanumeric (e.g., “Notifyre”) or numeric, depending on local regulations. Numeric Sender IDs may include short codes, long codes, or toll free SMS numbers used for business messaging.

Types of SMS Sender IDs 

Alphaneumeric Sender ID

• An alphanumeric sender ID Displays a combination of letters, or a mix of letters and numbers (e.g., Notifyre)

• Commonly used for branding in promotional or bulk SMS

Numeric Sender ID

• Displays a short code, virtual mobile number, or dedicated phone number

• Required in the United States due to carrier regulations

• Commonly used for two-way messaging or where Sender ID customisation isn’t allowed 

How a Sender ID Typically Shows in the Sender Field

Depending on your region and SMS campaign setup, the Sender ID may display:

• Business Name – The branded identifier of the sender.

• Short Code or Number – When a custom name isn’t supported, a number may appear.

• Country Rules – Not all countries allow alphanumeric Sender IDs.

Australian SMS Sender ID Registration

Alphanumeric Sender IDs used to send SMS to Australian numbers must be registered with the ACMA from 1 July 2026. Notifyre supports registration through the Notifyre platform. Numeric SMS sender IDs do not need to be registered with ACMA but Notifyre requires proof of ownership before activation.
